"China Blue" is this year’s Valentine’s music - Roger Friedman, Fox News
“The real thrill here is the way her rich, liquidy voice sails over the songs” - Falling James, LA Weekly
“Her voice has a remarkable range — lower than you thought a woman could sing and as high as any soprano at the Met. And every note has a fascinating texture — pure and rich” - James Donelan, Santa Barbara Independent, Live Review of SoHo, February 26, 2008

6.03.08 "CHINA BLUE" EARTHQUAKE CHARITY DOWNLOAD
"The other week I was driving along listening to a distressing story on NPR about a man in China who was trapped under a collapsed building from the earthquake. He was frantically calling his relatives on his cell phone - they were trying to dig him out and find help to reach him.
I found myself consumed with concern at the thought of this scared man fighting for his life. I haven't been able to get him out of my mind, and keep wondering what happened to him. Did he make it? I felt helpless, but then thought of something I might be able to do to help those suffering so terribly in China at this time.
This led me to the idea of offering a recent LIVE version of my song CHINA BLUE as a download, with ALL of the proceeds going towards a project called “Half The Sky” <http://halfthesky.org>.
This group is dedicated to providing nurturing care for China’s orphaned children. After reading about how this organization is already helping in Sichuan by offering emergency and long-term relief in this devastated area, I felt compelled to get on board and support their efforts.
China Blue (Live in Osaka) was recorded during our Jazz trio tour of the Billboard Live venues in Japan earlier this year. Captured by our dazzling sound engineer, Tom Dube <http://www.myspace.com/tomdube> (who also took the photo) - the tour featured the fabulous Spencer Cozens on piano <http://www.spencercozens.com/> (he is currently working with 2 of my all time fave artists John Martyn and Joan Armatrading), the amazing Jason Smith on drums <http://www.alternityrecords.com/jason-smith.html> and the indispensable Brett Simons <http://www.myspace.com/brettsimons> on bass.
Joan Armatrading - <http://www.joanarmatrading.com/> John Martyn - <http://www.johnmartyn.com/>
Available only in the U.S, China Blue (Live in Osaka) is now downloadable on MySpace at <http://www.myspace.com/juliafordham> for the charitable sum of $4.99.
I will collect the proceeds and then donate ALL of the profits to “Half the Sky”."

8.10.06 LOOKING FOR A GREAT BOOK? "This Is Your Brain On Music: The Science of a Human Obsession" (published by Dutton/Penguin Publishing). Written by Daniel Levitin. The book is written for a general (lay) audience, and tries to make accessible some of the cutting edge research on music and the brain that has been conducted over the last ten years or so. This is how the publisher describes it: Whether you load your iPod with Bach or Bono, music has a significant role in your life-even if you never realized it. Why does music evoke such powerful moods? The answers are at last be- coming clear, thanks to revolutionary neuroscience and the emerging field of evolutionary psychology. Both a cutting-edge study and a tribute to the beauty of music itself, This Is Your Brain on Music unravels a host of mysteries that affect everything from pop culture to our understanding of human nature, including: o Are our musical preferences shaped in utero? o Is there a cutoff point for acquiring new tastes in music? o What do PET scans and MRIs reveal about the brain's response to music? o Is musical pleasure different from other kinds of pleasure? This is what Oliver Sacks said: "Endlessly stimulating, a marvelous overview, and one which only a deeply musical neuroscientist could give. Daniel Levitin has a huge knowledge of music developed since the 1950s (and of blues, jazz, and etc. before this), and not merely a formal but a deep personal knowledge as an expert performer no less than as a listener. I particularly liked the discussion of 'safe' and 'dangerous' music, and I very much liked the final chapter on the evolutionary origins of music. An important book." Available on Amazon
